The article deals with the centuries-old disagree-ment between art and philosophy, its first and best known testimony being Plato's decision to get rid of the artists in his "The Republic". However, the ąuestion is raised, whether this conflict is a fundamentai one. What are the major points of disagreement? Could there be possibilities for agreement inherent in the very structure of these disciplines? What shape does this conflict take in the Modern times? To answer these ąuestions, the article considers the ąuotation from Gadamer, Hei-degger and Jaspers - influential modern thinkers on "philosophy and art". The dichotomy between the work of intellect and the work of intuition, brought about by Henri Bergson, is visualized by means of the visual metaphor of "circle and sąuare". The concluding remark is well summarized in Vladimir Nabokov's dictum: "There is no art without facts and there is no science without fancy".
