The aim of the article is to research the exhibitions held at VMU in 1922-1940 looking at their objectives and relation with the cultural space of the provisional capital Kaunas. The major sources of the research are exhibition catalogues, posters, announcements, invitations, comments on the events found in the periodicals of those times and memoirs. As the present work is the first attempt to analyze the topic in greater detail, the collected historiography is rather fragmented and sparse. According to the collected data, 27 exhibitions were organized at the university during the analyzed period. Generally, events can be divided into two groups: art and press and cultural exhibitions. The majority of displays (18) presented collective, group, or personal works of artists in painting, sculpture, architecture and folk art. Moreover, 9 press and cultural exhibitions were organized in order to spread the topicalities of science and culture and/ or political interests of the organizers. The organizers of the displays were public and artists’ organizations, academic community of the university and individual persons. By being open to staging the exhibitions VMU together with other institutions and organizations contributed to the cultural life of the city. Exhibitions as well as other events propagating spiritual values indicated the positive tendencies of academic and cultural life of the university. The analysis of the composition and content of the exhibitions confirms their importance in the cultural space of the city. The organized events represented the interests of artists, publishers and academic and cultural societies and aimed at dissemination of a wide range of artistic and political ideas. Summarizing the research it can be stated that art, press and cultural exhibitions strengthened and developed the bonds between the university and the cultural and social space of the city and country at large and contributed to the formation of the university image.en_US
