XV a. pradžioje įkurta Kauno šv. Petro ir Pauliaus parapija XVII a. tapo Kauno dekanato centru. Bažnyčios patronatas priklausė valdovui, parapiją rėmė Kauno miestiečiai, bajorai ir dvasininkai. Žymiausiu XVII a. mecenatu galėtume laikyti Pajūrės tijūną Kristupą Krišpiną Kiršenšteiną, 1624 m. fundacija atgaivinusį švč. Trejybės altariją ir suteikusį pajamų bažnyčios užbaigimui. Itin stipriai šv. Petro ir Pauliaus parapija nukentėjo XVII a. vidurio karų metu, beveik trečdaliu sumažėjo bažnyčios pajamos. Mergelės Marijos literatų brolija, XVII a. išgyvenusi didžiausio pakilimo laikuslt
The article describes material conditions of Kaunas St. Peter and Paul parish in the 17th century, its spiritual, cultural and charitable activities. There are also identified clergymen of the parish, their personal characteristics and public activities. The main sources of the study are inventories of the parish, materials of visitations, various privileges and other archival sources. Kaunas St. Peter and Paul parish was founded at the beginning of the 15th century. In the 17th century, it became the center of Kaunas deanery. Patron of the church was the ruler of the state. The parish always enjoyed a support from the ruler and this fact undoubtedly made the church stronger. The parish was supported by Kaunas city dwellers, Kaunas authorities (especially by burmistrs), Lithuanian noblemen and clergymen. The most famous mecenate of the 17th century could be the noble Kristupas Krišpinas Kiršenšteinas. In 1624, he provided funds to restore the altar of St. Trinity and to complete construction of the church. During the wars of mid-17th century, the church was extremely devastated. Compared to 1653 and 1673, income of the church decreased by one-third. Russian army destroyed the manor of Vaistariškiai which belonged to the parish. Leasing of houses and lots in Kaunas provided the church with huge income. More than a half of this money, however, was lost because of the war: many houses were burned down or destroyed. The contemporary priest of the church Benediktas Žuchrskis contributed the most to the restoration of the church. He personally funded restoration of the great altar of St. Peter and Paul. After the war, the situation of the church was restored only in 1671, when the rebuilt church of St. Peter and Paul was consecrated. Usually, priests of the St. Peter and Paul parish were famous clergymen of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, such as Mikalojus Slupskis and Benediktas Žuchorskis.[...]en
