In the beginning of the 17th century, the tradition of choosing underground vaults of churches and monasteries as a place of burial spread in Europe and Lithuania. Following this tradition, one of the most beautiful Lithuanian baroque churches of the 17th century, Pažaislis St. Virgin‘s Visitation Church located near Kaunas, became a tomb for the family of the church founder Pacas and Camaldulese monks. In the end of the 17th century, the burial crypt of the Pacai family was constructed under the porch of the church, whereas the Camaldulese monks crypt under the Chapter hall of the monastery. There were more crypts constructed under the church; however, the remains of the buried people survived only in the discussed burial crypts. Although the ensemble of Pažaislis St. Virgin’s Visitation Church and Monastery is a rather frequently analysed topic among scientists, the founders’ burial place is only touched upon without any detailed analysis. Therefore, the article presents the collected historical data about the establishment of the burial crypts of the Pacai family and Camaldulese monks as well as data about the buried persons: the founder of Pažaislis monastery Kristupas Zigmantas Pacas, his wife Klara Izabelė Eugenija de Maily Lascaris, their son who died after eight days of life and Camaldulese monks who lived in the monastery. The fragments of epitaphic inscriptions on the tombs of monks are presented for the first time in the annex of the article. Also, an in-depth analysis of architectural construction and decor of crypts is made. The article describes the remaining authentic details and the present protection and maintenance of the burial crypts. Recommendations on the preservation of crypts, which have a high historic and memorial value and are as important as the baroque church and the monastery itself, are offered.
XVII a. pabaigoje pradėta statyti Kauno Pažaislio Švč.
