Every work by well known Italian writer Umberto Eco is a special world, in which the author skillfully combines fanciful game with philosophical speculations. The writer literally puzzles his readers, forcing them to depart from the habitual stereotypes and consider the problems raised by him in completely new horizons, in terms of their depth and hidden essence. Hence, the originality of the category of chronotope in Eco’s works: time and space in his novels are characterized by multidimensionality and complexity; their boundaries are constantly changing. The article discusses the issue of chronotope in his first novel “The Name of the Rose”. Focusing on the organization of the narrative, the analysis reveals the originality of Eco’s picture of the world, his conception of life, and concepts of time and space. The narrative incorporates several space-time planes, which form a single unit.
