Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess the variation of children’s emotional and behavioral problems after participating in individual Play Therapy. The subjects of the study were 22 children who have participated in Adlerian individual Play Therapy, aged 6-11 years old. For thirteen children (59%) an Adlerian Play Therapy was held in their school (on parents, foster-parents or teachers application), while nine children (41%) used to attend play therapy in a Psychotherapy Center (on parents application). The clients were attending Play Therapy for minimum 6 and maximum 42 sessions. Play Therapy was held every once a week, except the occasions when it was a holiday or some other serious reasons for client to miss a session. Each session lasted for 50 minutes. The therapeutic work was based on A. Adler Theory principles: respect for a child, warm and friendly relationship with a child, reflections upon child’s feelings in a way he could understand, set up only the necessary limits, letting the child to link the play room with the real world. In the beginning as well as at the end of the play therapy children’s parents were asked to fulfill the questionnaires about the child’s health problems. Meanwhile the specialist fulfilled the questionnaire about the child’s inner strengths. The results of the study showed that a play therapy had a positive coherence with children’s emotional and behavioral problems variations. Hyperactivity / impulsivity problems in the end of a play therapy showed no variation, while children’s attentional, isolation and aggressiveness problems used to decline. Equally, it is established that after a play therapy children felt more courageous, capable, they were more able to connect with others and their feeling as though they count grew bigger. It was established that the improvement of children’s general psychological wellbeing was related to play therapy’s length. After sifting facts it was noticed that children’s behavioral (isolation, aggressiveness) problems variation had coherent with a number of play therapy sessions, whereas emotional and attentional problems variation was not associated with a number of play therapy sessions. On the other hand, it was noticed that play therapy’s length had positive influence on children’s feeling that they count but did not influenced neither children’s courage, feeling of capability nor ability to connect with others. The research work established that children’s emotional problems variation showed no correlation with children’s behavioral problems variation. It was identified that emotional problems variation had negative correlations with children’s attentional problems but was not associated with children’s isolation and aggressiveness problems variation. Emotional problems variation was not associated with attentional problems variation. An assumption that children’s courage, feeling’s as though they count, ability’s to connect with others and feeling’s of capability variations are interdependent was uncorroborated. Equally, it was found that children’s inner strengths variations were not related neither to children’s behavioral problems variation nor general psychological wellbeing improvement. However, it was approved that children’s inner strengths variations were associated with children’s emotional problems variation. It was identified that a negative coherence between children’s emotional problems variation and children’s courage variation is subsistent. It was established that a place where play therapy took place had no influence neither on children’s general psychological wellbeing improvement, emotional problems variation nor attentional problems variation. It was found that children’s feeling of self importance (as though they count) increased more for children who used to attend play therapy in psychotherapy center comparing to children who attended play therapy at school. A place where play therapy took place had significant influence on children’s behavioral problems variation. Although isolation problems variation was not associated with a play therapy setting, variations of children’s aggressiveness problems had significant difference when compared in different play therapy setting groups. What is more, it was established that neither children’s courage, ability to connect with others nor capability variantions had no coherence with play therapy setting.
