Abstract: According to statistical date, 16 thousand children of Lithuania live in childcare homes, Every year nearly 3 thousand children are taken from their original families for various reasons and half of them settled in childcare institutions of different types. In these institutions they brought up by educators. Due to recent developments in the content of educational process in childcare, trying to implement family – based model of care as far as possible in order to consider children‘s rights and increase quality of care, functions of educators are also changing. There are not enough researches in scientific literature, devoted to this topic. Actuality of this problem induced this research, aimed at investigation of the pedagogical model of the functions of educators in childcare institutions in Lithuania. Objectives defined: - Create a theorethical model of pedagogical functions of educators, based on scientific literature. - Analyse the results of estimation of different pedagogical functions, done by educators themselves. - Assess the importace of different pedagogical functions in educational process, based on this analysis. - Disclose strengths and weaknesses in the educational work in childcare institutions. Main methodological approach in our research – holistic and humanistic approach towards the child. A quantitative empirical study was implemented through these stages: - Creating a theoretical model of educational functions, based on analysis of scientific literature and practical tools of implementation. Working out a diagnostical questionnaire. - Interrogation of educators of childcare institutions, using this questionnaire. - Interviewing directors of childcare institutions on strong and weak sides of educational process. - Statistical data analysis, using computer programs SPSS and Excel. - Disclosing of strengths and weaknesses of educational process in childcare institutions, comparing the results of questionnaire and interviews. 150 respondents from 12 childcare institutions of different types (governmental and nongovernmental) were participating in the research. 10 directors of childcare institutions were interviewed. Conclusions: - Theoretical model of pedagogical functions of educators in childcare institutions, based on analysis of literature, included: attitudes, principals, functions, spheres of activities and their educational aspects. Main functions of educators coincide width those of social pedagogue. - Based on the research results, conclusion can be made, that educator‘s assessment of the importance of different functions coincide with their activities (implementation). Therefore most probably educators devote most of the time for those activities they think are most important. Most active work (86 %) and considered as most important (93%) is individual and group work with children. Last of activities is devoted to chidren‘s biological family. There is no possibility to expand this work, becouse no resources (financial, human, transportation) are foreseen for this kind of work in existing organizational structure. - Research revealed, that most important educational functions are: communication with the child to ensure good interpersonal relations (91%) and trust (91%), creating opportunity for them to feel respected and valued in the group of peers (91%), taking care of health condition and security of the child (91%). Less important appeared to be activies, related to enlightment of parents by brochures and magazines (23%), lectures and seminars (19%), participation in radio and TV programs (24%). - Summarizing, strong side in educational work in childcare institutions is creating meaningful individual relations width the child by caretakers. Weak side, according to results of research is work with biological parents of children who are under care.
