Abstract
The aim of the study is to analyse what kind of conceptual metaphors and how they reveal political ideology via language (metaphorical expressions), thought (conceptual metaphor and its conceptual correspondences) and rhetoric (power of rhetorical impact and manipulation). In order to achieve the aim, Critical Metaphor Analysis (CMA) was applied and the results of the research revealed that Lithuanian Conservatives and Social Democrats conceptualize politics in terms of war, the conceptual metaphor being POLITICS IS WAR; the development of the country is conceptualized in terms of a journey, the conceptual metaphor being DEVELOPMENT OF A COUNTRY IS A JOURNEY; the country is also comprehended in terms of a building, the conceptual metaphor being A COUNTRY IS A BUILDING. Also, the conceptual metaphors POLITICS IS A DISEASE, PASSIVE NATION IS A DISABLED PERSON, POLITICS IS A FLAW and POLITICS IS A NATURAL PHENOMENON are intrinsic in the discourse of the Conservative Party, whereas the conceptual metaphor ELECTION IS SPORT is characteristic of the Social Democratic Party. As the findings indicate, metaphorical expressions used in both discourses allow us to decode political ideas and views as the concepts of WAR, JOURNEY, BUILDING, DISEASE, DISABILITY, FLAW, NATURAL PHENOMENON and SPORT are related to complex and serious political, social, economic problems. Politicians speak about political issues related to their country using metaphorical expressions which consequently are the proofs of particular conceptual metaphors existing in their minds. Moreover, the metaphorical expressions used in their discourses have a rhetorical function to persuade the electorate to vote for them.
