What does it mean “to be a good nurse”? Perceptions of nursing students

“Tobeagoodnurse”isacomplexphenomenon.Itistheessentialgoalinnursingtraining,educationandpractice,andcanbeexperiencedthroughworkpractice.However,“tobeagoodnurse”istakenforgrantedandisrarelystudied,mostlywiththefocusonpersonalfeaturesandinrelationtogoodnursingandqualityofnursing.Theaimwastorevealnursingstudents’workexperience-basedperceptionsofthepersonalmeaningof“tobeagoodnurse”.Sample.Researchparticipantscomprised110finalyearnursingstudents.Methods.Fordatacollectionwereusedunstructuredindividualnarrative-basedwrittenreflectionsandthedatawasanalyzedbyapplyingtheinductivemanifestqualitativecontentanalysis.Results.Fornursingstudents“tobeagoodnurse”meanscourage,professionalism,loyalty,humanity,solidarityandcaring.Itisanindividuallyexperiencedphenomenon,meaningfulfornursingstudentswhentheycollaboratewithnursepractitioners,learnthroughcooperationandobservation,andhavetheopportunitytoactautonomouslybytakingresponsibilityfortheirownactions.Conclusion.“Tobeagoodnurse”isapartofwhothestudentisandthevaluesthats/heholdsdeartoher/him.
