Since 1993, all those entering the Department of History at Vilnius Pedagogical University had to answer in writing questions on General History. The tasks were analogical to those which were published in the “Dialogas” newspaper of 23rd February 1993 as well as in the school-leaving examinations test-book of 1992-1993. In 1994 and 1995, each entrance examination card included the task to analyze fragments of a juridical document. In 1996 this task was included into some of the examination cards only, so we did not choose this material for the analysis. In the tasks of 1993-1995, the graduates had to draw examination-cards which contained the 6th century tasks to analyze fragments of Lex Salica. Russkaja pravda the 11th century Societe des droits de 1’homnre ct du Citoyen (1789) Declaration of Independence (USA, 1776), etc. The analysis of the documents have not only been evaluated in points, but also analyzed carefully. We described the results of the General History examination of 1994 and 1995 in the pedagogical newspaper “Dialogas”. In this article we have investigated both the positive sides of the answers and the typical mistakes. The annual question naivies, filled in by the first - year students after having done the tasks, help us too. In the article we also quote examples of the instructions for the analysis of the documents and of other recommendations.
