Leonas Švedas started his literary career with the generation of the Lithuanian poets of the 1920s such as V.Mačernis and A.Nyka-Niliūnas. His early works, are close to those written by other young poets of his generation: they are domina ted by the philosophical discourse and keep apart from neoromanticism. Švedas differs from the other by rough language and absence of the ima ge of home and native land as a sign of perma nence. The year 1946 marks important changes in Šve das' life and activities. His works become close to the tradition of avant-gardism. The importance of philosophy grows. The ideas of F.Nietzsche, M.Hei degger, K.Jaspers, and J.P.Sartre teach how to see the world, how to live and create. Švedas critici ses communism, totalitarianism, the user society, cruelty of man, and alienation. Švedas was influenced not only by the philo sophical trend of existentialism, but also by the ideas of psychoanalysis, which help to reveal the dark instincts of man. He creates his own philosophical system inclu ding the ideas of irrational, existential philosophy and the psychoanalysis. Švedas chooses the avant-garde poetics to ex press ideas about the deformations of the world. The position of an avant-garde artist allows him to criticize the evils of the world, to shock the reader, and to make him think. Švedas turns to postmodernism, when he speaks about the relativity of time and space, about the subjective seeing of the world, and the impossibi lity to understand himself. Švedas created in two languages - Polish and Lithuanian. Thematically and formally, we can see his works written in both languages as one unit. Švedas translated a big part of his poetry to the other language. The situation of the postmodern artist permits him not to choose, which language is his own language, but to write in both and to translate his poems. The works of Švedas should be discussed in connection with the poetry of J.Kėkštas and A.Mackus. It is the tradition of the postwar avant-garde.
