Henris Parlandas – Suomijos švedų modernistas, paskutinius ir, ko gero, kūrybingiausius savo gyvenimo metus praleidęs Lietuvoje rašytojas, literatūros kritikas. Parlandas debiutavo Suomijoje 1929 m. eilėraščių rinkiniu Idealų realizacija (Idealrealizaton). Pasirodžius šiai knygai, aktyviai reiškėsi suomių, lietuvių, latvių literatūrinėje spaudoje, rašė esė, noveles. Viešėdamas Kaune, Parlandas parašė romaną Sudužo. Parlando romane dažnai veiksmas vyksta kavinės ir restorano erdvėse. Kavinėje vyksta kasdieniai pokalbiai, pasimatymai, sutvirtinantys ryšį tarp žmonių. Ši erdvė – tai ta, kurioje siekiama pasimiršti pasislėpus tarp žmonių, susiliejus su aplinka. Kavinėje galima pabūti su savo mintimis, nes ši erdvė neįpareigoja, jos įstatymai ne tokie griežti kaip restorano erdvės. Kavinėje galima apmąstyti savo gyvenimą, rasti paguodą, čia gali kilti genialių idėjų. Restorano aplinka yra kiek kitokia – nusakanti būties iliuziškumą, trapumą. Kavinė ir restoranas 1929–1931 m. autoriaus kūryboje tampa viena iš aiškiausiai apibrėžiamų erdvių.[...]
Henry Parland, the Finland-Swedish modernist writer, literary critic lived and spent the last and perhaps the most creative years of his life in Lithuania. Parland debuted in Finland in 1929 with his poetry collection Idealų realizacija (The Realization of Ideals). After the publication of this book, he was active in the Finnish, Lithuanian, Latvian literary press, wrote essays and short stories. During his stay in Kaunas, Parland wrote a novel Sudužo (To Pieces). The action in Parland’s novel often takes place in cafés and restaurants. Everyday conversations, spending time together or dating that strengthen the relations between the people take place in a café. This place is the one which helps to forget your concerns by hiding among the people, merging with the surroundings. You can stay with your thoughts in a café, since this space is noncommittal and does not have such strict rules as the space of a restaurant. You can think of your life, fi nd relief and ingenious ideas in a café. The surrounding of a café is a little different: referring to the illusions and tenderness of being. A café and a restaurant was one of the most clearly defined spaces in the works of the author in 1929-1931.[...]
