Abstract (en)
The bishop M.Valančius is a striking political figure of the middle of 19th century. Valuing his political activity and deserts to the national rebirth I'd single out the following: a) moulding of political consciousness (bishopric in the Lowland); b) preservation of nation (trying to hold back from meaningless taking part in the revolt in 1863); c) founding of the organisation structure independent from the occupation government (movement of Soberness); d) impulse to illegal printing and founding secret structures (activity of book spreaders); founding of illegal schools.
