Abstract (en)
The Lithuanian painter Kazys Šimonis maintained strong links with mythology and its symbols both in his paintings, engravings, poetry and in his various collections. He was interested in old Runic signs, folklore, ornaments, and Oriental art. Metaphor was his main medium of expression. Šimonis’s paintings and literary works are rich in various mythological motifs: the Sun - the source of life, the Planets - heavenly deities, the Wind - a supernatural creature, Laumė - a deity of Heaven and Earth, the Creator, the Angel - the messenger of gods, the Devil - his opposite, and various birds and animals.
