Narrative macrostructure has been widely investigated in various populations (children and adults; typically- and atypically-developing; monolingual and bilingual subjects) and languages. However, majority of the studies has focused on narrative macrostructure as a pure structural variable and, thus, its relations to linguistic competence and skills remain unclear. From one hand, following psycholinguistic serial models of speech production (Bock & Levelt, 1994), a speaker first builds a macrostructural frame and then applies linguistic competence for selecting proper syntactic constructions, morphological rules, and lexical items. On the other hand, a speaker with limited linguistic competence may be prevented from building well-developed macrostructure
