Factors linked public support for a possible coronavirus Covid-19 2nd wave lockdown policy in Lithuania

Abstract

Aims: The objective of the study was to assess the variables related to public support for a possible new lockdown due to the 2nd wave of the COVID-19 in Lithuania. Methods: An online survey was conducted with 502 participants living in Lithuania at the end of the first COVID-19 lockdown. The questionnaire assessed 1) perceived hazard of the virus; 2) perceived damage by the virus; 3) perceived effects of the lockdown. Results: The absolute majority (85.1%) of the sample would support a strict lockdown. Support for the lockdown was positively predicted by the perceived hazard of the virus and negatively – by the effect on the relationship with family members of the previous lockdown. Conclusions: The key argument advanced by individuals downplaying hazard of the virus is that COVID-19 is just another flu. Thus any case for further lockdown(s) should include extensive clarification of how COVID-19 is different from flu. In the case of the second lockdown, special effort shall be expended on making relationship counseling services more accessible by phone and electronic means.
