The aim of the article is to evaluate the ortographical skills of the first year students of Polish at Vilnius Pedagogical University. As the source for the research have been used dictations, written regularly by the first year students, and other tasks done during descriptive grammar and culture of language lectures. The analysis of the collected data allows to grate the orthographical skills as poor. The greatest problems are caused by the orthography of the words that have conventional spelling. These include the mistakes of the word forms spelled as one word or as separate words, the problems of capitalization. The rules of the spelling used in Lithuanian are being tranferred to Polish, for example the particle no occuring before the verb is spelt as one word with the verb as well as when it occurs before the other verbal forms; the names of nationalities are not capitalized, only the first letter of the names of institutions and organizations consisting of a number of words is capitalized. It is worrying that more and more frequently the words which spelling is based on the historically accepted conventions are misspelled. The material used for the research also contains mistakes that occur because of the regional difference in pronunciation of certain sounds in the Polish language spoken in Lithuania.
