Gotikos, kaip kultūrinės metaforos, atgimimas siejamas su aštuonioliktojo amžiaus angliškuoju gotikiniu romanu, kurio atsiradimui didžiulę įtaką turėjo to meto estetinė teorinė mintis. Pirmiausia, tai Edmund Burke filosofinis traktatas "A philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful" (1757), kuriame nagrinėjamos grožio bei didingimo kategorijos. Burke mintis apie baimės jausmą bei iš jo kylantį didingumą bei susižavėjimą, turėjo įtakos to meto gotikinei literatūrai ir visiems iš jos kilusiems žanrams, taip pat yra ir šiuolaikinės siaubo estetikos pagrindas.
