Chaimas Frenkelis (1857–1920) ir jo sūnus Jokūbas (1883–1967) Šiauliuose sukūrė modernią odos pramonę ir išvystė ją iki pasaulinio lygmens, davė postūmį Šiaulių miestui tarpukariu tapti stambiu pramonės, kultūros ir visuomeninio gyvenimo centru. Frenkeliai garsėjo ne tik kaip stambūs fabrikantai, bet ir kaip dosnūs labdariai. Jie garbingai vykdė pasiturinčio žydo gyvenimo prievolę – teikti labdarą ir socialinę pagalbą tiems, kuriems to labiausiai reikia. Ši šeima ženkliai prisidėjo prie Šiaulių žydų bendruomenės ir šiauliečių socialinės gerovės: rūpinosi jų švietimu, sveikatos apsauga, socialine globa, tikybos reikalais. Iki mūsų dienų išliko gausus Frenkelių šeimos paveldas Šiauliuose – fabrikas, gyvenamasis namas-vila, kiti jų lėšomis statyti pastatai, kurie šiandien yra tapę svarbia Šiaulių miesto architektūrinio paveldo dalimi. Per vieno gyvenamojo namo-vilos istoriją knygoje atskleidžiamas garsios žydų šeimos gyvenimas, parodoma jos įtaka Šiauliams ir sudėtingas jų likimas. Knygoje paliečiama Šiaulių pramonės istorija, reprezentuojanti Šiaulius kaip svarbų Lietuvos žydų kultūros paveldo miestą, atskleidžiami žydų gyvensenos ypatumai. Frenkelių puoselėtos šeimos susitelkimo, verslumo, labdaros, ne tik žydų tautos kultūros ir papročių, bet ir tarpkultūrinio sugyvenimo, bendražmogiškųjų vertybių puoselėjimo tradicijos giminėje yra aktualios iki šių dienų ir perduodamos iš kartos į kartą. Frenkelių šeimos istorija tapo neatsiejama Šiaulių miesto tapatybės ir vietovės genius loci dalimi. Chaimo Frenkelio vilos istorijos atskleidimo tikslas – prisidėti prie labai reikalingų Šiaulių miesto ir visos Lietuvos žydų kultūrinio gyvenimo rekonstrukcijų bei naujomis įžvalgomis papildyti nusistovėjusią Lietuvos architektūros istoriją.
The monograph starts with the chapter “The Frenkel Family in Šiauliai. The Family’s History and the Present”. The first chapter aims to review the history of the Frenkel family and their activities from the settlement in Šiauliai (in 1879) to the present. The text is based on the memories of Jacob Frenkel, the periodicals of the 2nd–4th decades of the 20th c., various stories and testimonies. The first part of the book discusses the early life of Chaim Frenkel, his arrival in Šiauliai, the establishment and start of business, describes some of the factors that determined the exceptionally successful growth of a leather processing company, and tells the story of the Frenkel family’s personal success. As far as scarce sources allow, the daily life of the Frenkel family, way of life, their mutual communication and views are discussed. The main attention is paid to Chaim Frenkel, the builder of the villa, and his son Jacob, whose activities were especially significant in various areas of life in Šiauliai. This part of the book touches on the industrial activities of the Frenkel family, without which it is impossible to reveal various other nuances of family life. The chapter reveals the attitude of the Frenkel family to Lithuania, their patronage and charity work for their city and country. The difficult twists of the Frenkel family’s life, determined by the years of the Second World War, are told as well. The losses of the family, the departure of the Frenkel family from Lithuania to the USA that has been little known so far are described. The Holocaust events in Šiauliai, which interrupted the history of the Frenkel family and the entire Jewish community of Šiauliai, are also discussed. It is about Šiauliai ghetto, which was located right next to the Frenkel family factory. Most of the Frenkel’s family relatives, their factory workers and many other Šiauliai Jews were killed in the ghetto of Šiauliai. [...]
