Didėjant urbanizacijos mastams, būtina akcentuoti darnų miestų vystymą(si). Miestų sistemos kūrimas tarnauja žmogui, tačiau siekiant išlaikyti tvarią aplinką, stiprią visuomenę, aukštus ekonomikos rodiklius, privalomas miestų planavimas darnios plėtros kontekste. Varėnos miestas jaunas, besikuriantis miestas apsuptas miškų. Dėl ypatingų gamtinių sąlygų, teritorinė miesto plėtra, nukreipta į išorę - ekonomiškai neefektyvi. Siekiant įvertinti Varėnos miesto darnios plėtros komponentus buvo atliktas ekspertinis tyrimas, kadangi ne visi komponentai vienodos svarbos, atliktas komponentų rangavimas. Nustatyta, kad planuojant Varėnos miesto plėtrą, didžiausias dėmesys turi būti skiriamas gamtos išteklių tausojimui. Vertinat visos Lietuvos mastu teritorijų planavimo darną, nustatyta, kad ekspertai nepritaria miškų urbanizacijai, taip pat vien tik teritorijų planavimo teisinio reglamentavimo tobulinimas neduos norimo rezultato be žmonių dalyvavimo viešuose svarstymuose, diskusijose teritorijų planavimo klausimais. Todėl darnus miestas galimas tik bendradarbiaujant, veikiant atsakingai ir suplanuotai, reikalaujant atitinkamos kvalifikacijos specialistų atsakomybės už padaromas grubias klaidas miestų planavime ir sprendinių įgyvendinimo procese.
