In her seminal 1985 paper, Shoshana Zuboff (1985, 5) writes: “Technology defines the horizon of our material world as it shapes the limits of what is possible and what is barely imaginable.” The technology cannot be considered neutral, Zuboff continues: “it is brimming with valence and specificity in the opportunities that it creates and forecloses” (Zuboff 1985, 5).While the technology is extending the horizons of possibility, it is the human activity of choice, which ultimately shapes the present day uses and the future designs of technology (Star 1999).
