The emotional state and fears of the first year students are discussed in the paper. The paper covers two research aspects: what is the extreme situation that the students fear to face and what are their greatest fears? 248 students majoring in different subjects have participated in the research. They were enrolled in the class "Behavior under extreme conditions". The students have filled in anonymous questionnaires. The research has revealed that the students suffer from many fears. So it is probably not by chance that they had chosen a course on behavior under extreme conditions since it is important for them to know what to do, how to live and why they are phobic about certain things while their friends are not. The emotional state of the first-year students is not satisfactory. The students have pointed out that they are mostly afraid of situations like fires, car accidents, drowning, not being able to help, etc. A number of students have social fears, such as attacks, sexual abuse, imprisonment, they are afraid of giving their opinion (9,68 %), mockery (0,81 %), examinations (2,02 %), betrayals, and euthanasia. From the data some conclusions might be drawn: not enough attention is paid to developing self-confidence in children at school. While running seminars, it is easy to notice that students lack abilities to analyze, systematize and interpret information. This is one of the reasons for the unwillingness to take exams and express opinion. The lack of knowledge and skills only intensifies these fears. Schools should be paying more attention to developing self-confidence in children as well as their abilities to analyze, systematize, and interpret information. Children should be taught how to give first aid and how to behave in emergency situations.
