Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės parlamentarizmo istorijos atspindžiai XIX a. kelionių aprašymuose
[Reflections of the parliamentarianism history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 19th century travel descriptions]

Nuo kelionių iki turizmo istorijos: mokslinių straipsnių rinkinys / sudarytojas Robertas Jurgaitis. Vilnius: Žara, 2019, p. 87-110
Growing and diversifying travel practices in the19th century influenced the process of preparation and publication of travel descriptions, which became early searches for cultural and national identity. Attention to the lasting value of the 19th century travel descriptions has already been highlighted in historiography, however, in separate cases, travel descriptions are invoked as important indications for evaluating the information provided by primary sources, recording relics of GDL institutional memory. Thus, the purpose of this article is to reveal reflections of the history of GDL parliamentarianism in travel descriptions of the19th century, assess the insights they provide. It is possible to observe in the research that the value of travel descriptions varies, the descriptions differ in genre, and the range changes from single and minor clues to use of valuable sources of the GDL parliamentarianism history, so in this article an attempt is made to “pause” only for more detailed reflections. The reflection of the Lithuanian statehood and the early history of parliamentarism, provided in the travel descriptions of Liudvikas Vladislovas Kondratovičius (signed: Władisław Syrokomla), embrace legendary episodes of activities of 13th century dukes, it is purposely constructed by the author in order to be able to portray that the pagan Lithuania conferred with citizens in folk assemblies or in diets (sejms), recognized the primacy of the legislation and law, it was a state that rebelled and elected its leaders and the illusion of a democratic society was actualized as an expression of longing for statehood of GDL and a veiled criticism of imperial politics of the Russian Empire. L. V. Kondratovičius not only mentions episodes of activity of diet (sejm) and dietines (sejmiks) of GDL (mentions the cir cumstances of the sessions of dietine of Trakai Voivodeship of 1720, 1773), he also mentions the important sources of the history of parliamentarism. Keletas pastabų apie XIII a. lietuvių kunigaikščio Tučiaus (Dučiaus) valdų lokalizaciją
[A few remarks on the localization of the 13th-century Lithuanian Duke Tučius (Dučius) possessions]

In the complicated process of state-building of Lithuania in the 13th century, as the unification of the Baltic lands by Mindaugas took place, the names of three Lithuanian dukes, Tučius (Dučius), Milgerinas and Gineika, who went to Livonia in 1245 and were baptized there, appear in the Livonian Chronicle. In addition to fragmentary information from written sources, the article seeks to identify three possible landmarks of the localization of the Lithuanian Dukes Tučius (Dučius) and his brothers (three toponymic sites). The research revealed that the holdings of these Lithuanian dukes should be localized in former Semigallian lands or their periphery in present-day Northern Central Lithuania (northern parts of Pakruojis, Pasvalys and northern parts of Joniškis district), and upon leaving Livonia, in eastern Latvia (now Rezekne district).

    research article
    Istorija : mokslo darbai = History. Kaunas: Vytauto Didžiojo universitetas, 2019, T. 115, nr. 3, p. 28-51
The article discusses the problem of localization of the Smolensk and Starodub sejmiks-in-exile of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) in the period 1667–1794. Based not only on the Constitutions of the Seimas of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but also on the systematic use of documents of the sejmiks-in-exile, were analyzed the ends of the 17th century projects for the establishment of the Smolensk Voivodeship office and premises for the activities of the sejmiks in the territory of Vilnius Lower Castle, were localized places of the 18th century sessions of the sejmiks (Bernardine Church and Monastery in Vilnius, Carmelite Monastery in Vilnius, parish churches in Alytus and Žiežmariai, etc.) and were determined places of non-traditional activity (in the Palace of the Supreme Tribunal of the GDL). The research used descriptive and comparative research methods, taking into account the theoretical discourse used in archeology of law and local research.

One of the most talented, productive and famous Lithuanian historians of the 20th century Adolfas Šapoka (1906–1961) paid most of his attention to the research of political history and in his most important and mature works analyzed statehood development of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (further – GDL) in 16th–18th centuries. Besides The History of Lithuania (published in 1936), edited by A. Šapoka, the best known to general public and academic community are dissertations of this historian, defended and appeared in separate publications: Lithuania and Poland after the Union of Lublin 1569. Features of their State Relations (published in 1938) and The Treaty of Kėdainiai 1655 or Swedes in Lithuania 1655–1656 (prepared in 1939, first time published in 1990). They are one of the biggest and most important researches by A. Šapoka which layed foundations of 16th–18th centuries GDL statehood development estimation in Lithuanian historiography and are published in this third volume of Works. It can be said that many insights of this Lithuanian historian did not loose scientific value and relevance up to this day. Yet historian Zenonas Ivinskis in eighth decade of the 20th century seeking to evaluate A. Šapoka’s contribution to Lithuanian historiography paid attention that in his research A. Šapoka was concentrated on problems of GDL statehood – “Relations of Lithuania and Poland”, “Independence efforts of Lithuania and various other questions”, Republic of Both Nations, created by Union of Lublin, interpreting as federal state. Professor Antanas Tyla evaluating A. Šapoka’s historiographical heritage also noted that: “research about political society’s public efficiency of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in united state after Union of Lublin makes the bigger part of his creative legacy”. A. Šapoka was brave to undertake explorations of turning points, which were fatal to statehood development of GDL. [...]
