    Concerns over the health of trees in the Europe has increased dramatically in recent years with the appearance of several emerging fungal pathogens previously unknown in the European countries which can affect growth and cause mortality of many trees species. Public urban green spaces (parks, forests, green roofs and community gardens) have played an important role in reducing the level of pollutions and creating the better living conditions for people. A good management at private and public nurseries is important to ensure growth of good quality plants. Nursery managers are responsible for the day-to-day operations of a nursery. In the present study, we have established questionnaire to analyze and evaluate information from managers responsible for forests containing a substantial component of pines in their mix of tree species. The key questions were related with the susceptibility of pine to Dothistroma septosporum and Lecanosticta acicola pathogens and knowledge about how they spread. These fungal pathogens cause needle necrosis and premature needle loss, resulting in substantial growth loss. In February of 2017, the 32 public and private land managers were interviewed. The analysis of questionnaire answers shows that Pinus sylvestris, Pinus mugo, Pinus nigra are the main pine species grown in Lithuania. The respondents indicated Pinus strobus and Pinus ponderosa pine species as having the lowest resistance for fungal diseases. Some nurseries are imported pines seeds and seedlings in Lithuania from the southern and central parts of Europe. Pines growing in Lithuania are exported to the northern, eastern, southern and western European countries. This is the potential disease pathways.     Fungal outbreaks are more common and reports of outbreaks caused by unusual fungal pathogens are increasing. Its hard to describe one reason, why fungal outbreaks are more common. They are causing significant losses, both private and public institutions, who are raising plant crops or other plant species. Therefore, the plant pathogen detection and accurate identification is one of the most important strategic steps to control plant diseases by taking preventive or curative measures into use. 2016 in Lithuania, needles were colected from three species of pine. We analyzed needle samples colected from the three species of pinein Lithuania for presence of Lecanosticta acicola and Dothistroma septosporum pathogenic fungus. Morphological identification (microscopic examination) allowed to detect both D. septosporum and L.acicola conidia. Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method with specific primers only D. septosporum was identified. Applying real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were identified both D. septosporum and L. acicola pathogenic fungus.

    Dothistroma septosporum is a pathogen of Pinus spp. and some species in the genera Larix, Pseudotsuga and Picea. This pathogen causing red band needle blights of pine also known as Dothistroma needle blight (DNB), is a serious needle disease across the globe. Disease causes needle necrosis and premature needle loss, resulting substantial growth loss. At present Dothistroma septosporum has a worldwide distribution. In Lithuania the first report appeared in 2005. In late autumn of 2015 infected needles of Pinus sylvestris, Pinus mugo, Pinus nigra were collected in west and central parts of Lithuania. Needle samples were collected from each Pinus spp: 8 trees, from each tree 8 needle pairs collected from a single tree. Our main idea of this work was to compare infection frequecy in Pinus spp. in the different parts of Lithuania. Research was made in Vytautas Magnus University plants and animals laboratory and Nature Research center, Botanical institution. Molecular analysis was performed with classical PCR and real-time PCR. Samples were analysed and results show that in Lithuania western part most infected was Pinus sylvestris, than Pinus mugo and least Pinus nigra. In Lithuania central part most infected was Pinus nigra, than Pinus mugo and least Pinus sylvestris.

    The fungal pathogens causing diseases in pines

    Fungal infections are the main cause of emerging infectious diseases in forest trees. Over the past decades, the number of invasive fungal pathogens in Europe has increased exponentially. In this paper the fungal pathogens causing the most common diseases in pines like Dothistroma needle blight, brown spot needle blight, Lophodermium needle cast, Scots pine blister rust, Scleroderris canker, and Pitch canker were analyzed. These diseases cause defoliation, increase susceptibility of plants to other diseases and pests, and tree mortality can also occur. As a result, the forest industry is suffering severe economic losses. The fungi species causing infection in forest trees have been described as serious pathogens across the world including Europe, confirming a fast spread of their ranges. Knowledge of pathogens distribution, life cycle and disease symptoms are essential for the diagnostic and control of pathogenic fungi. Human-driven species expansion has increased in the last century due to the growth of international travel and trade, resulting in huge disturbance to ecosystems. Most of the plant diseases are strongly influenced by environmental conditions. Climate change has important consequences on plants, pathogens, and the interaction between them, resulting in changes on diseases epidemics. Fungal infections of plants are difficult to control because pathogens populations are variable in time, space, and genotypes. The potential damage in the future may be large, and that is why we have to be aware of the problems and discuss some possible approaches to reducing the threats.
