Abstract: The aim of this thesis paper is to analyze the pleasure and pain in Anthony Burgess’s novel A Clockwork Orange. The analysis is based on the theoretical framework of hedonism and mainly focuses on the works of Epicurus and Epicureanism. The protagonist of the novel, Alex, is a 15-year-old psychopath who commits various heinous crimes like rape, breaking and entering, car theft, vandalism, and eventually, murder. Alex does all these things just because he experiences pleasure while doing it and what later follows is his surreal venture down to hell. The thesis itself is divided into two major parts - the first part, introduction, and theory behind pleasure and pain and the second part is the analysis of picked segments from the novel where pleasure or pain are expressed. The novel itself is divided into three parts, which I chose to divide and name them into 4 parts: Expediency, Suffering, Retribution, and Atonement. Expediency is about the life that Alex experienced while he was constantly granting himself pleasure and nothing else. Suffering is about the cruel and twisted ways he had to experience pain and how he was brainwashed. Redemption is the continuation of pain he had to suffer through after coming out of prison. Atonement is the very last chapter of the novel, which holds significant meaning on its own, and it is a part where Alex decides to finally change the way he wants to live.
