The aim of this national research project was the application of a new lubricant circuit care technology in cold rolling mills for filterless treatment and additional decrease of high oil losses. The central element is a combination of strong magnetic separator and hydrocyclone. Intensive industrial trials at CDW, a producer of cold-rolled special steel products, and TKN, a stainless steel strip producer, in full flow and bypass applications with an adapted industrial construction from Cymatec GmbH have shown a decrease of operational costs and lubricant losses of about 25%. Additionally, technology for continuous detection of fine scale solids has been tested successfully in pilot and industrial stages. The project results have made a useful contribution to the protection of natural resources.
