In this study the magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) with carbonyl iron, on a basis of synthetic oils with various viscosities and different solid loading of the silica fumed additive were synthesized and studied. The tribological performance of the synthesized MRFs under no magnetic field was evaluated using block-on-ring tester under constant load of 50 and 100 N. In all the investigated MRFs the carrier oil viscosity and silica fumed contents are found to have strong influence on the tribological performance. According to the tests, as the viscosity of the MRF carrier oil increases, the friction coefficient decreases and its character changes. In the case of the lowest carrier's oil viscosity, the friction coefficient displays sensible constant value. Similar effects can be observed in the MRFs with increased silica fumed solid loadings.
