The structural adjustments in agriculture are related to the post-communist transformations that began in 1989 – 1990. The main objective of these reforms is the transition from socialist agriculture system to the agriculture system functioning of the market conditions. The main transformation processes which took place during the transitional period were the restitution of the land, the decollectivization and the development of new private property. According to the World Bank expert's model of conversion, agriculture had to become a fully operational market economy, based on private property and individual family farms. However, the initial phase of the reforms failed to achieve the targets because not only family farms had been created, co operative and corporate farms had too. One sort of corporate farms – agricultural companies – was the predominant form of farming in the beginning of Lithuanian agricultural structural development. Continued reform, on a variety of reasons the majority of companies have been liquidated. As shown in the results of research of Pakruojis district agricultural companies, most of the surviving companies are major market economies able to compete with other farmers of agriculture for the land, labor resources and production outlets.
