[Music education – the the subject of spiritual values spread]

Educational research shows that beauty, goodness, religiousness and other spiritual values, in the eyes of the students, are almost in the last place of the value scales; the research shows that the prestige of these values is not growing, but decreasing (Aramavičiūtė, 2005; Martišauskienė, 2004, 2011). There are a lot of cases of offensiveness, rudeness, mocking and dependencies in schools. This is making the society concerned, thus it is important to look for preventative means to decrease the manifestation of evil in schools. This task may be helped, along by other factors, by developing music education as artistic-spiritual education. A relevant problem arises: What are the philosophical, psychological, musical and educational implications and possibilities in schools? The provision of Education concept (1992) also shows the necessity to reorient education towards a change of persona culture. This means that schools must not submit to the tendency to go with the flow of the degrading mass culture; schools must go above the existing cultural environment (Lukšienė, 1993).[...]

The growing needs of modern society encourage continuous learning and the acquisition of new competences. Frequently, questions arise as to how teachersí professional competence is understood and expressed, especially, in musical education. By identifying the latter, the process of learning music could be improved; the links between conveying theoretical knowledge and development of practical skills could be ameliorated. This would help to encourage students, who are studying or intend to study, to analyse their existing practical competences and select appropriate curricula. The paper presents one part of the comparative study aimed at revealing music teachersí professional competences related to the competence of creation of (self-) educational environments, competence of assessing pupilsí achievements and progress, and competence of professional development. Besides, based on the analysis of scientific literature, the content of music teachersí professional competences is discussed, assumptions and impact on both the teaching process and the educational environment are analysed.

The article discusses the approach of school principals towards the improvement issues of music education. The article analyses how school principals evaluate certain aspects related to music education in school. 160 principals from Lithuania and 7 from the USA participated in the research which revealed the conditions, provided to improve the learners’ musical skills in extra-curricular activities. Musicianship in vocal ensembles is highlighted, as well as playing music in instrumental ensemble. The research ascertained if the schools devote sufficient amount of funds to equip music classrooms with teaching (learning) means and if school administration encourages and financially supports initiatives of music teachers in organizing school’s musical life, and conditions created in the school ensure the responsibility of music teachers for the quality of music education. Music teaching (learning) in school is organized purposefully, with the aim to meet not only the learners’ experience and skills, but also their dispositions. The financial base of the general education schools is similar: the insignificant abundance of instrument choice, but however, it is impossible to say that there are no instruments at all. The greater choice of instruments and their quality enables students to achieve better results and strengthens their motivation in the field of musicianship. Therefore, it is necessary for the school principals to support the idea of enriching the inventory of instruments, rather than devoting most of the funds for the implementation of technological innovations.
