Lubunca in social transition: a sociolinguistic analysis of the secret queer language
Çakar, Burak Alp |
Lubunca is a constructed, secret language that was originally created to conceal its users’ identity but has now emerged as a symbol of LGBTQ+ activism in Turkey and is celebrated as a vessel of visibility and acceptance. As a language that reflects the multilingualism of the community that uses it, Lubunca represents an unintentional celebration of linguistic diversity. Despite its significance, little is known about attitudes towards Lubunca and its role in constructing queer identity. This study examines the attitudes towards Lubunca by its current users, its function as a queer identity builder, and its overall significance for the community that uses it in Turkey. To achieve this, structured surveys (N=61) and narrative interviews (N=5) were conducted with people affiliated with Lubunca. Qualitative and quantitative analysis methods were employed to analyze the survey data, while a mixed method design incorporating critical discourse analysis and narrative analysis was used for the interviews. This study makes an original contribution to the field of language and sexuality studies by examining the attitudes towards Lubunca and its function as a queer identity builder in Turkey. The study finds that Lubunca is no longer simply a tool for identity concealment. Its existence is crucial in identity building and community strengthening, as well as resisting discrimination and marginalization, and its users generally view the language positively.
