Support of democracy and acceptance of democratic rules is an essential condition for the effective functioning of democracy. Democratic governments slowly create an affective reservoir of diffuse support for democracy that helps their survival during the period of a short-term economic hardship. @is article investigates sources of political trust in Lithuania. @e method of the study is an analysis of the data of a survey sample conducted in 2010. In the first section of the article, the concept of political trust is defined and modes of support of democracy are introduced. In the second, the sources of political trust are analyzed. In the third section, the impact of the Soviet legacy and post-Communist transformation are examined. In the fourth, the results of the analysis of the survey data are presented and discussed. @e paper concludes that such factors as evaluations of the country’s current economy and its economy in the future, pride in the Lithuanian citizenship, evaluations of procedural justice in local government and satisfaction with life influence political trust. Attitudes towards social benefits and dissatisfaction with life are related to the attitudes towards welfare during the Soviet regime. @e collective sociotropic perceptions of how the nation as a whole fares economically affect political trust directly and egocentric concerns indirectly.

Analyzing the qualitative data from 4 focus-group interviews (2 interviews were conducted in urban and 2 in rural locations), this article identifies features of political and social trust and participation in relation to the consolidation of democracy in Lithuania. Lithuanians have low trust in political institutions; their trust depends on complex factors such as a big social gap between the political institutions and citizens, negative portrayals of the political institutions in mass media, centralized decisions of the political institutions or minimization of a communal voice. Political trust is low in communities and locations in which local authorities do not support or maintain any social contacts with local residents. Mass media influence immensely citizens’ political trust in the national government or political institutions; citizens’ distrust is often based on media scandals involving politicians and public figures. Lithuanians’ participation in communal or public activities is often characterized by the principle of competition: several communities or non-governmental organizations in the same location often duplicate same tasks and compete with each other. Similarly, because of their narrow activities and social networks, communities tend to maintain fragmentary connections with local residents. Pragmatic, rational and personal interests as well as a trust in narrow social networks characterize the low level of social trust in people and limited communal participation in Lithuania.

[Teenagers’ experiences during their parents’ work abroad:a narrative approach towards the understanding of a phenomenon]

Kultūra ir visuomenė : socialinių tyrimų žurnalas = Culture and society : journal of social research. Kaunas : Vytauto Didžiojo universiteto leidykla, 2011, nr. 2(1), p. 61-78
Discussing different approaches towards social phenomena, the article deals with one aspect of transnational families, namely teenagers’ experiences after their parents’ leaving for work abroad. A narrative mode of cognition (i.e. narrative methodology) was chosen to verify the existing dominant narrative about teenagers’ negative attitudes towards their parents’ emigration. Because of the ethical issues of interviewing teenagers, six young adults were involved in the research instead. During the research semistructured interviews were conducted and the collected data were analyzed by using structural and interpretative narrative approaches. Recollections of adults’ stories about their teenager experiences were organized into three coherent narratives: stories related to a changing family model, personal growth and ambivalent feelings. By connecting the meanings constructed by all the coherent narratives, a meaning different from those described in paradigmatic studies was extracted. A narrative approach towards the understanding of the phenomenon enabled us to demonstrate the multiplicity of teenagers’ experiences: on the one hand, their difficulties encountered in the change of their role in the family, the different mode of communication, their sadness and anger due to the situation and, on the other hand, happiness about the freedom, pride of their parents’ trust in them and their willingness to grow up fast.

This article fills the gap in the research on the motives of intergenerational support. Using qualitative data, it examines the question of intergenerational support between adult children and their parents. The theoretical premises for the study are derived from the theory of symbolic interactionism. The interviews with the dyads of support providers and receivers reveal a strong emphasis on the exchange. The exchange based on the logic of reciprocity is either latent or manifest. Other symbolic meanings of the logic of reciprocity, i. e., exchange as an investment and a social debt, can also be noticed. The analysis of the motives demonstrates the reasons for the formation of the intergenerational attitudes: a role of demonstration effect and a strong role of primary and secondary socialization with certain internalized attitudes. Altruism is expressed by emphasizing emotions and affection. Several thematic segments are apparent in the interviews: altruism as an unquestioned phenomenon, altruism as a primordial quality and attachment as an object of reflection. The article suggests that the inclusion of an action level into intergenerational relationship studies helps to deepen the understanding of family relationships.
