VMU is Celebrating the Czesław Miłosz Year (updated 02.08)


On Thursday, February 10, at 4 p.m., the first of the many events of Nobel Prize for Literature Winner’s Czesław Miłosz’s centennial commemoration will take place, as an exhibition "Sugrįžimas / Powrόt / Return" will be opened at the VMU Aula Magna (Gimnazijos g. 7).

2011 has been declared the year of the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, VMU Honorary Doctor, Honorary Citizen of Lithuania and one of the greatest 20th century poets, Czesław Miłosz. The 100th anniversary of the poet’s birth will be commemorated by celebratory events at the university and in Miłosz’s hometown Šeteniai.

The celebrations of the Czesław Miłosz year will begin with the exhibition dedicated to Czesław Miłosz’s anniversary, titled "Sugrįžimas / Powrόt / Return", which will be opened at VMU Aula Magna. The programme will use photos and excerpts from the poet’s speeches and poems to tell the details of Miłosz’s return to Lithuania after 52 years.

The exhibition "Return" shows the period of Czesław Miłosz’s historical journey through time and space. All throughout the Czesław Miłosz Year, the exposition will follow this famous author’s trail in Lithuania and abroad, using three languages (Lithuanian, Polish and English) to tell about this journey.

During the opening of the exhibition, a special publication honouring the 100th anniversary of Czesław Miłosz’s birth (in Lithuanian, Polish and English) will be introduced. It consists of renowned historian’s Egidijus Aleksandravičius’ text on Miłosz’s search and revelations in the poet’s journey of life, the Czesław Miłosz’s speech accepting the regalia of Vytautas Magnus University Honorary Doctor, and Czesław Miłosz’s bibliography from 1988 to 2010 (compiled by L. Bucevičiūtė). The texts in this publication are also presented in three languages.

The guests of the exhibition "Sugrįžimas / Powrόt / Return" will be shown fragments of documentaries from the fund of the Lithuanian National Radio and Television, which have captured the moments from Miłosz’s visit in Lithuania and Vytautas Magnus University, as well as a film created by Kristijonas Jakubsonas especially for the occasion.

A special programme prepared for the event by Lina Puodžiukaitė will blend elements of poetry, modern art improvisations and music, coming to life with the help of actor Petras Venclovas, pianist Kotryna Kaklauskaitė and dancer Petras Lisauskas.

The string of events commemorating Czesław Miłosz will resume in May, when an exposition will open in the Miłosz’s native town Šeteniai, dedicated to Czesław Miłosz and his relation to his hometown and Lithuania.

On May 6-7, international conference ‘From Poetical Pilgrimage to the Search of the Homeland: Adam Mickiewicz, Oscar Milosz and Czesław Miłosz’ will take place in Šeteniai. Literature scientists, historians and ethnologists will make presentations and discuss three multicultural personalities – Adam Mickiewicz, Oscar Milosz and Czesław Miłosz. On June 27 – 28, the international conference marking Czesław Miłosz’s 100th birthday ‘The Times and Places of Czesław Miłosz’ will be held. The discussions during the event will touch upon the author’s heritage in the cultural contexts of Lithuania, Poland, Central and Eastern Europe, France and the USA. Other notable subjects include issues of  Czesław Miłosz’s works’ topography, links between historical imagination and individual identity, choice of values, intellectual and political stance.

After the conference in Vilnius, on June 29 – July 1, events of the cultural programme in centennial commemoration of Czesław Miłosz "Miłosz ‘s Way" will take place in Kaunas, Kėdainiai, Šeteniai (Lithuania) and Krasnogruda (Poland).
