Vytautas Magnus University celebrated the beginning of the new academic year on 1 September. As always, the festivities offered a lot of excitement to both old and new members of the entire VMU community.

The celebration on 1 September began at 12 p.m., when the faculties met with the Lithuanian first-year students. The newcomers received a warm welcome, met new friends and got some pleasant surprises.

At 1.30 p.m., the international students joined the celebration near the Vytautas Magnus monument (Laisvės al. 96), where the loud and cheerful crowd of happy flag-waving people were congratulated by the Kaunas Municipality members and smiled for a photo opportunity.

This was followed by the traditional procession of all participants and the wind orchestra Ąžuolynas from the monument to the Vienybės Square, where the beginning of the new school year was marked at 2 p.m. The first-year students solemnly swore to be faithful to the university, listened to the congratulations by VMU Rector and the guests and tasted the huge festive VMU cake.

This year VMU has welcomed an especially large number of international students from all corners of the world. For this occasion, the International Office prepared the traditional introductory week of events as a way of getting the international students familiar with the university, the city and the country. More information about the introductory week, which took place from 27 August to 2 September, is available here.
