Call for Applications for Admission to MIREES

Applicants from all over the world are invited to apply for two-year joint degree study programme of Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Research and Studies on Eastern Europe (MIREES), which is co-organised by VMU, University of Bologna (Italy), Corvinus University of Budapest (Hungary) and St. Petersburg State University (Russia). Application deadline is 24 May 2013.

The programme is taught entirely in English (120 ECTS credits). Students of this programme are provided specialized, in-depth knowledge concerning the post-socialist countries in transition, the new EU member states, and the new Eastern European neighbour countries. Prospective applicants are expected to have an undergraduate (BA) degree in economics, politics, international relations, history, languages (Slavic in particular), agricultural studies or cultural studies.

MIREES is also focused on development of language skills, offering courses in Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Russian, Slovakian, Lithuanian (Hungarian is also available in the 2nd year), as well as Italian. The curriculum is focused on Central Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Balkans and includes interdisciplinary studies in economics; history, media and international relations; politics and sociology. The international dimension of the programme is enhanced through student mobility abroad, through courses offered by an international faculty composed of prominent scholars of international repute, and by a genuinely international student body.

MIREES students spend the first year in Forli, one of the five campuses of the University of Bologna. During their second year, students spend at least 6 months at one of the Partner Universities (including Ljubljana and Belgrade) and, in particular cases, at other MIREES Associated Universities in the Balkans. A mobility grant is offered to all enrolled students.

The programme is especially recommended for prospective PhD students. MIREES alumni are currently pursuing doctoral degrees at Harvard, Oxford, Kent and other prestigious universities. MIREES prepares analysts, area experts, consultants and mediators, who meet the needs of research institutes, the European Commission, international agencies, voluntary organizations and NGOs, public administration, managers, corporations and banks in CEE and the Balkans, or promote investments in these regions. Most of MIREES alumni find employment in the aforementioned fields.

The next deadline for applications is May 24, 2013.

More information is available on the website of the programme or can be received by contacting the Academic Tutor of the course ( or the MIREES Secretariat (, phone +39 0543 374149).
