Abstract: Essential for the Polish culture concept of nobility (szlachta), in the Lithuanian language has clearly more complicated conceptualization, which is proven by the fact that it is expressed with the help of two different lexemes: bajoras and slekta. This article aims at tracing changes that occurred in relations in the meanings of these two words, especially in semantics and stylistic immanence of the polonism šlėkta. As attention is mainly focused on the use and connotations of this word in modern Lithuanian, considerations are based on three fairly different stylistically types of texts. To be more precise, these are: historiographical entries from the last 50 years, Lithuanian translation of Adam Mickiewicz's epic poem Pan Tadeusz, which appeared in 1974, and texts taken from the internet, which show live, not always recorded by the dictionaries, trends
