Abstract
About a 50 % of yield worldwide is lost every year due to abiotic stresses. One of most common stresses is draught. Even short draught excess conditions cause stress in almost every plant. Green foxtail plant perfectly suits for in vivo experiments, because it has short life time and it also has small genome. The study was carried out in the Aleksandras Stulginskis University JRC Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology. The effect of potassium bicarbonate on soluble sugar and proline content in green foxtail plant under draught conditions was evaluated. It was found that drought conditions induced accumulation of proline and total sugar. Treatment by tested potassium bicarbonate concentrations stimulated plants resistance to draught conditions, stabilized water evaporation processes. The best effect was achieved using 20 mg l-¹ of potassium bicarbonate solution. Potassium bicarbonate significantly decreased proline and soluble sugar amount in green foxtail plants, indicating that plants are more easily adaptive to excessive draught stress.
