Abstract
Straw is local, renewable and ecological fuel the use of which should be promoted in the cpuntry. Not only wheat, rye and barley straw can be used, but also that of buckwheat, rape and also sol sead plants. Straws from different species burn differently. Some burn out quickly, leaving almost no ashes, others burn slowly and leave the whole carcass of the plant that turns to ashes. It was determined that the most calories contain straw and rice pellets: 20.2 MJ/kg and the lowest calorie count was found in straw (10 mm) pellets: 17.8 MJ/kg. Also the pellet fuel moisture content was determined. The highest moisture content of 10.1% was found in straw-peat pellets and the lowest in reed pellets 7.9%. For the manufacturing of pellets relatively dry raw materials have to be used. Their moisture content may not exceed 15%. In the studies conducted elemental composition has been determined. Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen content was found to be within standards but sulfur content is too high: in 10 mm straw its 0.10% and in straw-peat its 0.12% above the norm. These levels have to be reduced.
