Abstract
The history of the Presidential Palace started this day 160 years ago. Its origins go back to the period ruled by Tsarist Russia. After establishing Kaunas Province in 1843, there were plans to construct the Gubernatorial Palace on the quay of the Nemunas River. However, in 1866 for this institution a two-floor house of the merchant Solomon Feinberg situated in a spacious plot with a garden nearby Sankt-Peterburgo St of that time was rented. Construction of this residential-type house was initiated in 1846 by Flora Čechavičienė, who represented the local nobility. On the ground floor of the palace designed by the captain F.Winter, 7 big rooms were planned, whereas on the 2-nd floor 9 rooms had to be constructed. In 1876, the Government decided to buy the house of Feinberg for the Gubernatorial Palace; reconstruction was made in the course whereof an eastern extension for water closets was added, and in the northern facade a two-floor wooden gallery was constructed. After Lithuanian State Restoration, on September 1 of the year 1919 the President of the Republic of Lithuania and his Chancellery moved to the palace. They worked here until the very Soviet occupation, i.e. by June 15, 1940. In the palace, apartments for the President and halls for official receptions were situated. Roughly in 1933, a wooden gallery was glazed; premises became too dark, therefore, a rugged skylight was constructed.
