Abstract

Spectators’ participation in contemporary Lithuanian theatre is the subject of this master graduation work. To reveal the subjects’ historical circumstances of “fourth wall” origin and destruction were discussed. Also, international context where the main methods of audience participation and directing strategies are purified (which has connections with immersive theater, the use of media and technologies, community participation and discussions) is presented and analyzed along with the influence of the need of participation in the context of culture and specific cases from Lithuanian theatrical context with the directing strategies of audience’s involvement.
The relevance of the subject is because of the current increase of attempts and strategies of drawing in not only vision and hearing but more of the individuals’ receptors in Lithuanian theatrical context and abroad. These strategies are usually tied with immersive theater where the spectators’ choice of how and how much to participate in the action plays an important role. It is also intriguing that this kind of practice is usually dissociated from conventional theater spaces and the term “immersive theater” is rarely used in the critic of Lithuanian theater.
The research reveals that in Lithuania it is getting more and more popular to involve the audience into the action of performance or the process of creation and it is not possible to estimate this process only negatively or only positively. It is expedient to estimate when particular case and its directing strategy is properly analysed.
In this work are researched performances such as: “Kaligula” and “Barikados” - these performances that are discussed as an illustrative interactive examples with a touch of strategies of creation of collective aura. Performances „Karo muziejus: nauja pradžia“, „Labirintas“, K. Žernytės’ „Pojūčių teatras“, performance – theather game, „Kodas: Hamlet“, are researched in the context of immerssive theatre. Performances Vienatvė 1991, TI, Salomėjos genomas, Keliaujančios Bažnyčios are discussed in the context how can media and technologies help audience to participate in theatre. Žalia pievelė ir Nežinoma žemė. Šalčia are discussed as the cases of involving community into the process of performance creation.
It is noticeable that creators and troupes that has tendencies to involve audience are appearing in Lithuania and this trend is developing and occurs in a number of performances. Usually they can be identified as creators of quite marginal non-conventional theater. They become counterbalance for the psychological reality theater which is denying the involvation of the spectator by its form and aesthetics.
These attempts and strategies sometimes are not fully filled out or purposeful because of being quite new form of resolution in Lithuanian theater context. Also, superficial interactivity does not garanty full involvation for the spectator which is discussed by Gareth White in his book Audience Participation in theatre: Aestetics of Invitation, which is a fundamental book and by far the most important text of this theme.
