The purpose of this article is to review fundamental premises of the Catholic doctrine of the Matrimony in the light of the theology of deification which constitutes an essential aspect of Christian soteriology. From the perspective of the doctrine of deification, the human being is understood as a creature called to special unity with the Creator by way of appropriation of qualities and characteristics of the Creator Himself. This universal vocation to share the very life of the Divine Trinity constitutes the uniqueness of the human person. Equally, the readiness of the Creator to share what is of His own nature with creatures reveals Him as source and model of unlimited self-giving goodness. The very first and ultimate manifestation of this self-giving love is the life of the Trinity itself, in which the highest possible unity of Persons is accomplished as the consequence of unlimited mutual self-giving. The total opposite of Trinitarian relationship is the self-seeking egocentrism of the fallen angel. Similarly, the self-giving of God and the self-seeking of Satan can be interpreted from the perspective of category of being or real-ness. As a comparison of the totally Triune and the totally individualistic life of reveals, real-ness of being stems directly from the amount and quality of self-openness and self-giving. God’s unlimited Being is concurrent with His self-giving. Likewise Satan’s feeble existence is the immediate result of his self-seeking attitude. Every human person finds himself between the two mentioned models of existence. In every one of us, willingness to love exists side by side with the powerful inclination to remain in the illusion of self-sufficiency. Christianity proclaims that in Christ the possibility of receiving the beginnings of divine nature and thus of becoming “gods not by nature but through adoption” was once and for all opened to human race.[...]en
