Abstract: The article scrutinizes the theoretical difficulties which are encountered while trying to give the definition of the specific object of aesthetics. In so far as aesthetics is held to be a branch of philosophy, the coherence of the adduced philosophical argument is the main criterion for deciding in favour of and upholding one or another ever presented view. Two possible, plausible and well-known answers to the question “What is the due object (and subject-matter) of aesthetics?” are analysed. One is: Aesthetics deals with beau ty; another runs as follows: Aesthetics deals with art. Although both answers have their own undeniable merits, some decisive shortcomings peculiar to the either do not let the author of the article opt between the two unequivocally. Moreover, the proposal is made not to judge them as rigid alternatives
