Abstract

The study was conducted in the farmer's fields in Dotamai village, Vilkaviškis region, in April – August 2020.
The subject of the study is the edible onion (Allium cepa L.).
The aim of the study is to assess the effect of seaweed Ecklonia maxima concentrate on the yield and quality of the common onion.
During the scientific study, common onions were sprayed over leaves with a 0.3⁒ seaweed concentration solution 1, 2, 3 times over the course of vegetation. After harvesting, the impact of seaweed Ecklonia maxima on the yield, chemical composition (dry matter content, soluble dry matter content, vitamin C content, nitrate content) and biometric parameters (altitude and diameter of the onion bulb) was examined, and the resulting data compared to the control variant where the common onions were not treated with the seaweed concentrate.
Ecklonia maxima, an extract of seaweed, was found to have had an essential impact on the yield of the onions. Substantial differences were observed between onion bulbs sprayed with seaweed extract solution 2 and 3 times during the growing cycle compared to the control variant. The yield was highest at 2 times. The onions, which have been sprayed with seaweed extract solution 2 times, have grown bulbs of maximum diameter and height compared to onions which have not been treated with concentrate during the growing season. It was also found that the extract of seaweed had an essential impact on the chemical composition of the onion bulb. By increasing the use of seaweed extract, the number of nitrates in onion bulb has declined substantially and there has been a substantial increase in the amount of ascorbic acid.
