Abstract

The aim of this empirical research study was to investigate the connection between the regular yoga practice and emotional intelligence.
In total, 833 participants took part in the research study, 249 of whom were in group that regularly practice yoga and 584 in the group that do not practice yoga. 164 (19,7%) of the participants were men, 670 (78,3%) were women. Participants were between 18 and 79 years of age, average age – 40.92. 50,3% of participants reside in the continent of North America, 27% in Europe, 19,2% in Australia, the remaining participants reside in the remaining continents. 62,8% of the study participants hold university level education.
Study subjects were selected using convenience sampling and were resourced using internet and social media websites. Emotional intelligence was measured using SSEIT (alternative abbreviation – SREIT) – The Schutte Self Report Emotional Intelligence Test (1998) – questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out using independent sample Student‘s t test.
After statistical significance level of 0.05 was applied and gender-related control implemented, the study results revealed a statistically significant connection between the regular practice of yoga and emotional intelligence and the subdimensions of EI, namely, emotion understanding and emotion regulation among women. Such connection among men was not found. The relationship between the length of practicing yoga and emotional intelligence had not been found either.
The scope of the study and the results generalization limitations do not allow for recommendations of application. However, it adds significantly to the already existing body of research of these concepts.
