Abstract
In contemporary culture irony is understood first and foremost as a refuge of moral relativism. This dissertation questions such an understanding with the help of Søren Kierkegaard’s thought. The research first addresses the problem of reading Kierkegaard’s works, which arises because of the multifaceted and huge in scope usage of pseudonyms. In addition, it is argued that undeservedly forgotten early Kierkegaard’s text “On the Concept of Irony” should be considered one of his most central works. Kierkegaard’s thought contains two concepts of ethics, which are related hierarchically. The first ethics is the ethics, which obeys social norms and observing them considers its duty. Such ethics is limited because of its incapacity to solve the problem of the consciousness of guilt. While the second ethics is the ethics, which is capable of solving the problem of the consciousness of guilt, yet the transition to it is not mediated. Irony, according to Kierkegaard, is capable to solve both this communicative problem, by mediating the abyss between the first and the second ethics, while at the same time it can be applied as an auto-therapeutic tool in the case of the first ethics.
