Abstract
The rise of nationalism in India, which began in late 19th century, was both constructive and destructive. Constructive because it contributed to the attainment of independence thereby ending the colonial era. Destructive because its inner ideological architecture is ambiguous and ambivalent – in forging a nation and national identity based on the principle of binary opposition between Self and Other the ideology outlines signifiers of inclusion and segregates a people based on ethnic and/or religious identity, also leaving a constant possibility for radicalization and annihilation of freedom. Two themes are important for this research – first, the fundaments of nationalist discourse in India, the justifications for a nation and a complicated network of ideas that makes the idea of a nation. Second, how does nationalist, an ideology based on romanticism and a desire to end the oppression translates itself into a radical ideology aiming to destroy the heterogeneity of society. The object of this research is the spread of nationalist in the fisrt half of 20th century, and its representation in selected literary works and films. A work of fiction is important because it recomplicates events and ideas that are being oversimplified in the grand narratives and dominant discourses. For that reason it is just to think that individual history (in a novel or film) can become and does become a public history of culture, society and politics. This research is attempting to reestablish the individual history to the surface of public life, and to show alternative discourses, fictive identities, demoralizing politics at work in forging a nation – something that is not visible in the triumphalist history of Indian nationalism.
Nacionalizmas Indijoje, kurio sklaida prasidėjo XIX a. pabaigoje, buvo tiek konstruktyvus, tiek destruktyvus.
