Abstract
At the end of the 20th century (in the 80‘s) the science of cognitive linguistics has emerged. It has denied the tradition of structuralism and traditional interpretation of metaphors. Linguists have acknowledged the word, as a value of the result of cognitive activity. At the same time the connection between human mental and linguistic systems has been revealed. Until then, the metaphor was considered as a poetic device and a language embelishment. Lakoff'as G. and M. Johnson in the book \"Metaphor we live by\" have sugested a new interpretation of the metaphor. They have also emphasized its importance for the language as well as for the explanation of understanding of the world. Lithuanian public discourse is one of the areas that reveals the public mentality and conceptualization of important and relevant events. Linguistic expressions help to determine how some events, that appear in the press, are expressed methaporically. For instance, the situation of refugees in Lithuania and Europe. In the master's thesis, conceptual metaphors, involving the cognitive linguistic theory and methods, are being analysed. Articles that have been collected from the Lithuanian public discourse and linguistic metaphorical expressions reveal how the situation of refugees has ben conceptualized by authors of articles of public discourse.
