Abstract
The study presents a survey of national and civic values’ manifestation and dissemination within the social science and moral education textbooks is particularly relevant and important in the context of the ongoing debate about the change moral dispositions/values of young people. It is likely that the results will help to find answers to some of the concerns of the public related to issues of the role of textbooks directing the youth values and civic behaviour; will enable the prediction of prospects in citizenship and national teaching/learning development; will enable to formulate certain methodological recommendations to the authors of textbooks. The study presents the modern trends in the national and citizenship education, the analysis of the Lithuanian and foreign countries’ textbooks, outlines the concepts’ of Lithuanian textbooks and trajectories the changes, the analysis of social and moral education textbooks used in the comprehensive education schools, focusing on the manifestation of the national and civic values within them. The object of research: the content of social and moral education textbooks used in grades 5–12 of comprehensive education schools. The aim of research: to explore the national and civic values’ manifestation and dissemination in social and moral education textbooks for grades 5 to 12. The aim was concretized by the following research objectives: 1. Describe national and citizenship education trends in modern contexts. 2. Analyse and summarize textbooks research within the Lithuanian and international education contexts. 3. Reveal the Lithuanian comprehensive education school textbook concept, purpose, functions and requirements for the quality of content configurations for 1990–2012. 4. Identify civic and national values’ manifestation and dissemination at the comprehensive education school through the social and moral education textbooks used. [...].
