Abstract
Akademija, 5 p.

Research object: District road no. 3703 Ylakiai - Vabaliai - Prialgava section from 0.713 to 5,524 km and State Road No. 164 Mažeikiai - Plungė - Tauragė section from 53.85 km to 54.30 intersection with road NR. 3201 Truikiai – Prūsaliai.
Research aim: To identify the reasons for the deterioration of the technical condition of roads and the effectiveness of technological solutions for the installation of pavements for its strengthening.
Objectives: To review the literature on the requirements for road pavements in Lithuania, the methods of draining water from the road surface and pavement, measures to increase the strength and stability of the road pavement. To carry out research into the technical condition of previously built gravel roads and the causes of existing damage. To determine the effect of lime on the strength and stability of the pavement soil.
Research methods: The thesis analyzes the current gravel road situation and technical condition according to the indicators of constant maintenance, evaluating changes between new and lost power standards. The main causes have been identified which lead to a decrease in the quality of gravel roads. In the review of scientific literature sources, also are analyzed the requirements for road pavement and the effectiveness of measures to increase strength and stability factors. presented the meaning of ground soil deformation modules, which have been determined with the static plate using the updated LST 1360-5: 2019 methodology.
Research results: The first chapter analyzes the sources of scientific literature on the statistics of existing gravel roads and already reconstructed roads, norms for road embankments and alternatives that improve its quality, and similar research conducted by other scientists on measures to increase the strength and stability of road embankments; the second part presents the purpose of the research and the tasks aimed at analyzing the set goal; the third part of the work presents the working methodology on the basis of which laboratory tests were performed; in the fourth part of work analyses and summarizes the results of the work.
Conclusion: After analyzing the literature and the condition of the already built gravel roads, it was found that the strength and stability of the road embankment depends especially on the soil moisture, therefore it is necessary to drain the road base with roadside ditches, drainage and proper maintenance. It has been found that in cases where the road embankment consists of different soil types and compaction does not allow to achieve the required deformation modulus, soil replacement is an alternative means to improve soil bearing capacity and equalize mechanical properties to achieve deformation modulus Ev2 ≥ 45 MPa. However, this method is one of the most expensive, as additional earthworks are required to change the soil and it is inefficient in terms of time when faced with large amounts of soil. And due to the strengthening of the soil with lime - additional requirements are imposed - the deformation modulus Ev2 ≥ 70 MPa, but this measure is one of the cheapest and does not require much additional land resources compared to the alternative solution of soil replacement.
