Abstract
This article elucidates personal life as well as pedagogical and scientific work of Marija Andziulytė- Ruginienė. She was the first woman in Lithuania to be awarded doctor's degree. Marija Andziulytė-Ruginienė was born in a peasant's family on December 16, 1886 in the village of Smalinyčia, Vilkaviškis district. Having finished Vilkaviškis girls' Gymnasium, she studied history at the Universities of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Fryburg.
On February 7, 1923, she was awarded doctor's degree by Fryburg university for her research work on Christianizing of Samogitians (Žemaičiai). Having returned to Lithuania from Switzerland, she taught history in Vilkaviškis Gymnasium "Žiburys", in women teachers' seminary of Lithuanian Women Culture Society in Kaunas as well as in women teachers' seminary "Saulė" in Kaunas. She worked as a head-mistress in the latter seminary from 1926 till 1936. After that she continued her teaching career in secondary school 11 in Kaunas. However, during the second Soviet occu-pation she was dismissed from the teacher's position and had to work as a secretary in the same school because her husband had been a political exile. She retired in 1952. On October 10, 1973, she died in Kaunas and was buried in Paežeriai.
Being a teacher, she participated in the congresses of Lithuanian catholic scientists and researchers: the second congress elected her as a member of a regular governing body of history committee.
Her monograph "The Beginning of Christianizing of Samogitians (Žemaičiai)" was published in Kaunas in 1937. Many articles on historical, pedagogical and cultural issues were published in pre-war periodical press.
Marija Andziulytė-Ruginienė left memoirs about J. Tumas-Vaižgantas, V. Mykolaitis-Putinas and S. Nėris. She also prepared two short studies: "The First Lithuanian Secondary School with Lithuanian as the Language of Instruction" and "A Short History of a Small Lithuanian Place. The Village of Smalinyčia and its People".
