Abstract: The textbook Ancient History for the 6th-7th forms (Lietus Publishers, Vilnius, 1996) by E. Bakonis and V. Virganavičiūtė is reviewed. A non-traditional lay-out, an imaginative text and additional textual sources, links between the period which is being described and present times, as well as creative tasks and questions are considered the textbook’s advantages. Another important merit is that the specific character of the historian’s work is shown and that the students are encouraged to compare different historical sources and to think critically. Occasionally oversimplified text and illustrations and the most important historical events of a given period that are inadequately explained are viewed as the drawbacks of the book. A chapter on pre-history would also be welcome.
